Introduction
Breast cancer (BC) is the most prevalent malignancy affecting women globally. Despite advances in medical interventions, survivors face persistent challenges in psychological and physical adaptation. The diagnosis of BC can profoundly impact professional trajectories, making the process of returning to work fraught with challenges. This study aims to explore the experiences of healthcare professionals returning to work post-BC diagnosis in China.
Methodology
The study employed a descriptive qualitative research approach, focusing on the experiences of 20 doctors and nurses from three municipal hospitals. The research team, comprising individuals with extensive healthcare experience, conducted face-to-face interviews using a semi-structured guide. The data were analyzed using thematic content analysis, following the Colaizzi method.
Results
The study identified four major themes:
- Return to Work: Willingness and Conflicts
- Cancer Progression Anxiety
- Physical and Mental Re-Awareness
- Reflection and Re-planning
Return to Work: Willingness and Conflicts
Participants expressed a strong desire to return to work, citing access to convenient medical resources and a supportive work environment. However, some interviewees felt guilty about extending sick leave, fearing it might burden colleagues.
Cancer Progression Anxiety
Despite their medical knowledge, participants experienced anxiety about cancer recurrence and its impact on their future and family. This anxiety added to their mental stress.
Physical and Mental Re-Awareness
Participants reported decreased physical abilities and frustration due to cognitive limitations and emotional challenges. These issues affected their self-esteem and ability to perform their duties effectively.
Reflection and Re-planning
The diagnosis prompted participants to reflect on their past values and lifestyle choices, leading to active life re-planning and a renewed sense of life’s value. Career changes were also considered to mitigate physical stress.
Discussion
The study highlights the unique experiences of healthcare professionals returning to work post-BC diagnosis. It underscores the importance of a stable work environment, substantial income, and support from colleagues and superiors in enhancing adaptability. The findings also suggest the need for comprehensive support mechanisms related to leave.
Conclusion
Chinese healthcare professionals appear to have positive experiences returning to work post-BC diagnosis, benefiting from rich medical knowledge and a supportive work environment. The study recommends that hospitals implement comprehensive support mechanisms to acknowledge the need for adequate rest during treatment.
